Local Path Planning with Dynamic Obstacle Avoidance in Unstructured Environments

Obstacle avoidance and path planning are essential for guiding unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) through environments that are densely populated with dynamic obstacles. This paper develops a novel approach that combines tangentbased path planning and extrapolation methods to create a new decision-making algorithm for local path planning. In the assumed scenario, a UGV has a prior knowledge of its initial and target points within the dynamic environment. A global path has already been computed, and the robot is provided with waypoints along this path. As the UGV travels between these waypoints, the algorithm aims to avoid collisions with dynamic obstacles. These obstacles follow polynomial trajectories, with their initial positions randomized in the local map and velocities randomized between O and the allowable physical velocity limit of the robot, along with some random accelerations. The developed algorithm is tested in several scenarios where many dynamic obstacles move randomly in the environment. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed local path planning strategy by gradually generating a collision free path which allows the robot to navigate safely between initial and the target locations.


Microrobot Vascular Parkour: Analytic Geometry-based Path Planning with Real-time Dynamic Obstacle Avoidance

Autonomous microrobots in blood vessels could enable minimally invasive therapies, but navigation is challenged by dense, moving obstacles. We propose a real-time path planning framework that couples an analytic geometry global planner (AGP) with two reactive local escape controllers, one based on rules and one based on reinforcement learning, to handle sudden moving obstacles. Using real-time imaging, the system estimates the positions of the microrobot, obstacles, and targets and computes collision-free motions. In simulation, AGP yields shorter paths and faster planning than weighted A* (WA*), particle swarm optimization (PSO), and rapidly exploring random trees (RRT), while maintaining feasibility and determinism. We extend AGP from 2D to 3D without loss of speed. In both simulations and experiments, the combined global planner and local controllers reliably avoid moving obstacles and reach targets. The average planning time is 40 ms per frame, compatible with 25 fps image acquisition and real-time closed-loop control. These results advance autonomous microrobot navigation and targeted drug delivery in vascular environments.


Dynamic Obstacle Avoidance with Bounded Rationality Adversarial Reinforcement Learning

Reinforcement Learning (RL) has proven largely effective in obtaining stable locomotion gaits for legged robots. However, designing control algorithms which can robustly navigate unseen environments with obstacles remains an ongoing problem within quadruped locomotion. To tackle this, it is convenient to solve navigation tasks by means of a hierarchical approach with a low-level locomotion policy and a high-level navigation policy. Crucially, the high-level policy needs to be robust to dynamic obstacles along the path of the agent. In this work, we propose a novel way to endow navigation policies with robustness by a training process that models obstacles as adversarial agents, following the adversarial RL paradigm. Importantly, to improve the reliability of the training process, we bound the rationality of the adversarial agent resorting to quantal response equilibria, and place a curriculum over its rationality. We called this method Hierarchical policies via Quantal response Adversarial Reinforcement Learning (Hi-QARL). We demonstrate the robustness of our method by benchmarking it in unseen randomized mazes with multiple obstacles. To prove its applicability in real scenarios, our method is applied on a Unitree GO1 robot in simulation.

Christensen 1 and Sicun Gao 1 Abstract -- Learning-based methods for constructing control barrier functions (CBFs) are gaining popularity for ensuring safe robot control. A major limitation of existing methods is their reliance on extensive sampling over the state space or online system interaction in simulation. In this work we propose a novel framework for learning neural CBFs through a fixed, sparsely-labeled dataset collected prior to training. Our approach introduces new annotation techniques based on out-of-distribution analysis, enabling efficient knowledge propagation from the limited labeled data to the unlabeled data. We also eliminate the dependency on a high-performance expert controller, and allow multiple sub-optimal policies or even manual control during data collection. We evaluate the proposed method on real-world platforms. With limited amount of offline data, it achieves state-of-the-art performance for dynamic obstacle avoidance, demonstrating statistically safer and less conservative maneuvers compared to existing methods. I NTRODUCTION Control Barrier Functions (CBFs) provide an effective framework for safe robot control [1], [2].The recent development of learning-based CBF methods exploit the expressiveness of neural networks and data-driven approaches to handle systems with complex dynamics and high uncertainty, with promising results [3], [4], [5], [6], [7], [8], [9]. However, the scalability of learning-based methods has been a major bottleneck. The typical approach for learning neural CBFs requires sampling over the entire state space to enforce constraints from the standard CBF conditions [10].


Dynamic Obstacle Avoidance through Uncertainty-Based Adaptive Planning with Diffusion

By framing reinforcement learning as a sequence modeling problem, recent work has enabled the use of generative models, such as diffusion models, for planning. While these models are effective in predicting long-horizon state trajectories in deterministic environments, they face challenges in dynamic settings with moving obstacles. Effective collision avoidance demands continuous monitoring and adaptive decision-making. While replanning at every timestep could ensure safety, it introduces substantial computational overhead due to the repetitive prediction of overlapping state sequences -- a process that is particularly costly with diffusion models, known for their intensive iterative sampling procedure. We propose an adaptive generative planning approach that dynamically adjusts replanning frequency based on the uncertainty of action predictions. Our method minimizes the need for frequent, computationally expensive, and redundant replanning while maintaining robust collision avoidance performance. In experiments, we obtain a 13.5% increase in the mean trajectory length and a 12.7% increase in mean reward over long-horizon planning, indicating a reduction in collision rates and an improved ability to navigate the environment safely.


Tactile Aware Dynamic Obstacle Avoidance in Crowded Environment with Deep Reinforcement Learning

Mobile robots operating in crowded environments require the ability to navigate among humans and surrounding obstacles efficiently while adhering to safety standards and socially compliant mannerisms. This scale of the robot navigation problem may be classified as both a local path planning and trajectory optimization problem. This work presents an array of force sensors that act as a tactile layer to complement the use of a LiDAR for the purpose of inducing awareness of contact with any surrounding objects within immediate vicinity of a mobile robot undetected by LiDARs. By incorporating the tactile layer, the robot can take more risks in its movements and possibly go right up to an obstacle or wall, and gently squeeze past it. In addition, we built up a simulation platform via Pybullet which integrates Robot Operating System (ROS) and reinforcement learning (RL) together. A touch-aware neural network model was trained on it to create an RL-based local path planner for dynamic obstacle avoidance. Our proposed method was demonstrated successfully on an omni-directional mobile robot who was able to navigate in a crowded environment with high agility and versatility in movement, while not being overly sensitive to nearby obstacles-not-in-contact.


GeoPro-VO: Dynamic Obstacle Avoidance with Geometric Projector Based on Velocity Obstacle

Optimization-based approaches are widely employed to generate optimal robot motions while considering various constraints, such as robot dynamics, collision avoidance, and physical limitations. It is crucial to efficiently solve the optimization problems in practice, yet achieving rapid computations remains a great challenge for optimization-based approaches with nonlinear constraints. In this paper, we propose a geometric projector for dynamic obstacle avoidance based on velocity obstacle (GeoPro-VO) by leveraging the projection feature of the velocity cone set represented by VO. Furthermore, with the proposed GeoPro-VO and the augmented Lagrangian spectral projected gradient descent (ALSPG) algorithm, we transform an initial mixed integer nonlinear programming problem (MINLP) in the form of constrained model predictive control (MPC) into a sub-optimization problem and solve it efficiently. Numerical simulations are conducted to validate the fast computing speed of our approach and its capability for reliable dynamic obstacle avoidance.


Exploration Without Maps via Zero-Shot Out-of-Distribution Deep Reinforcement Learning

Operation of Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) of all forms that include wheeled ground vehicles, quadrupeds and humanoids in dynamically changing GPS denied environments without a-priori maps, exclusively using onboard sensors, is an unsolved problem that has potential to transform the economy, and vastly improve humanity's capabilities with improvements to agriculture, manufacturing, disaster response, military and space exploration. Conventional AMR automation approaches are modularized into perception, motion planning and control which is computationally inefficient, and requires explicit feature extraction and engineering, that inhibits generalization, and deployment at scale. Few works have focused on real-world end-to-end approaches that directly map sensor inputs to control outputs due to the large amount of well curated training data required for supervised Deep Learning (DL) which is time consuming and labor intensive to collect and label, and sample inefficiency and challenges to bridging the simulation to reality gap using Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL). This paper presents a novel method to efficiently train DRL for robust end-to-end AMR exploration, in a constrained environment at physical limits in simulation, transferred zero-shot to the real-world. The representation learned in a compact parameter space with 2 fully connected layers with 64 nodes each is demonstrated to exhibit emergent behavior for out-of-distribution generalization to navigation in new environments that include unstructured terrain without maps, and dynamic obstacle avoidance. The learned policy outperforms conventional navigation algorithms while consuming a fraction of the computation resources, enabling execution on a range of AMR forms with varying embedded computer payloads.


A vision-based autonomous UAV inspection framework for unknown tunnel construction sites with dynamic obstacles

Tunnel construction using the drill-and-blast method requires the 3D measurement of the excavation front to evaluate underbreak locations. Considering the inspection and measurement task's safety, cost, and efficiency, deploying lightweight autonomous robots, such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), becomes more necessary and popular. Most of the previous works use a prior map for inspection viewpoint determination and do not consider dynamic obstacles. To maximally increase the level of autonomy, this paper proposes a vision-based UAV inspection framework for dynamic tunnel environments without using a prior map. Our approach utilizes a hierarchical planning scheme, decomposing the inspection problem into different levels. The high-level decision maker first determines the task for the robot and generates the target point. Then, the mid-level path planner finds the waypoint path and optimizes the collision-free static trajectory. Finally, the static trajectory will be fed into the low-level local planner to avoid dynamic obstacles and navigate to the target point. Besides, our framework contains a novel dynamic map module that can simultaneously track dynamic obstacles and represent static obstacles based on an RGB-D camera. After inspection, the Structure-from-Motion (SfM) pipeline is applied to generate the 3D shape of the target. To our best knowledge, this is the first time autonomous inspection has been realized in unknown and dynamic tunnel environments. Our flight experiments in a real tunnel prove that our method can autonomously inspect the tunnel excavation front surface. Our software is available on GitHub as an open-source ROS package.


FAPP: Fast and Adaptive Perception and Planning for UAVs in Dynamic Cluttered Environments

Obstacle avoidance for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in cluttered environments is significantly challenging. Existing obstacle avoidance for UAVs either focuses on fully static environments or static environments with only a few dynamic objects. In this paper, we take the initiative to consider the obstacle avoidance of UAVs in dynamic cluttered environments in which dynamic objects are the dominant objects. This type of environment poses significant challenges to both perception and planning. Multiple dynamic objects possess various motions, making it extremely difficult to estimate and predict their motions using one motion model. The planning must be highly efficient to avoid cluttered dynamic objects. This paper proposes Fast and Adaptive Perception and Planning (FAPP) for UAVs flying in complex dynamic cluttered environments. A novel and efficient point cloud segmentation strategy is proposed to distinguish static and dynamic objects. To address multiple dynamic objects with different motions, an adaptive estimation method with covariance adaptation is proposed to quickly and accurately predict their motions. Our proposed trajectory optimization algorithm is highly efficient, enabling it to avoid fast objects. Furthermore, an adaptive re-planning method is proposed to address the case when the trajectory optimization cannot find a feasible solution, which is common for dynamic cluttered environments. Extensive validations in both simulation and real-world experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed system for highly dynamic and cluttered environments.
